Porto Airport was opened in 1945 and was initially known as Pedras Rubras Airport, named after the location where the airport is located. It was renamed in 1990 in honor of former Portuguese Prime Minister Francisco de Sá Carneiro, who died in a plane crash while on his way to this airport.

With the new terminal, built between 2003 and 2006, the airport offers all the necessary services to passengers from security checks at the boarding gate, including bars, shops, duty-free and lounges. The airport is managed by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal S.A. and owned by VINCI Airports which, as the world's leading private airport operator, develops, finances, builds and ensures the day-to-day operation of 72 airports in 13 countries.
