Ryanair postpones digital boarding pass requirement
Ryanair has officially announced the postponement of the obligation to use the digital boarding pass exclusively to 3 November 2025, coinciding with the start of winter operations. The decision stems from the intention to give customers and airport partners more time to adapt to the new process.
Initially scheduled for summer 2025, the full digital shift is one of Ryanair's strategic initiatives to optimise the passenger experience and fully digitise the boarding process, making it more efficient, faster and more sustainable. However, after listening to feedback from some partner airports, the company has decided to postpone the final introduction by a few months, while encouraging the use of the Ryanair app and the digital boarding pass format as of now.
As stated in the official note, "Ryanair continues to work with airports to ensure a smooth and seamless transition", underlining the importance of cooperation between carrier and airport infrastructure to achieve an increasingly integrated and digital service.
The digital boarding pass is already used by the majority of Ryanair passengers, thanks to the intuitive and functional mobile app. The full adoption, now scheduled for the winter, will phase out the paper version, reducing the environmental impact and speeding up the time at security checks and boarding.
What changes for passengers
Until November 2, 2025, passengers will still be able to choose whether to use their paper or digital boarding pass. Starting from 3 November, however, the digital boarding pass will become mandatory for all Ryanair flights, except for some specific cases such as special assistance needs or airports that do not yet support the digital format (exceptions that will be communicated by the company itself).
This transition is part of Ryanair's wider strategy of digitising services, with the aim of improving the customer experience, reducing emissions and streamlining operational processes. The digital boarding pass will be easily accessible from the official app, even offline, and will ensure faster and safer boarding.
With over 183 million passengers transported in the last year and an ever-expanding network throughout Europe, Ryanair confirms itself as one of the most active airlines in the digital evolution of the airline sector, focusing on smart, accessible and sustainable solutions.
