Wizz Air calls for action for more sustainable aviation
At COP29, the airline encouraged urgent alignment to create the regulatory frameworks needed to scale affordable SAF production, improve renewable energy infrastructure and incentivize technological advances
Wizz Air reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonisation during COP29's Transport Day. The airline seized the opportunity for dialogue and collaboration offered by COP29's Transport Day, highlighting the urgency of collective action to achieve the ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050 set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). By participating in the conference, Wizz Air reaffirmed its commitment to the decarbonisation of the aviation sector, highlighting the crucial importance of international cooperation and effective policies to accelerate this transition.
COP29 was an extraordinary platform, bringing together key industry figures, including government representatives, industry leaders, environmental experts and investors. In line with the European aviation industry's collective call, Wizz Air has joined a number of stakeholders to push for the adoption of the European Union's Clean Industrial Deal and promote the development of a sustainable transport investment plan.
Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Wizz Air has emphasized the need to incentivize the local production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), recognizing it as one of the key priorities for the decarbonization of the sector. The company has already made significant investments in the sector, collaborating with innovative companies such as:
- Firefly, a British company committed to the development of SAF from renewable waste.
- CleanJoule, a company that produces SAF using agricultural residues.
These projects reflect Wizz Air's concrete commitment to promoting the spread of SAF, reducing the environmental impact of aviation and contributing to a significant decrease in CO₂ emissions.
The importance of Carbon Markets
Another central point of Wizz Air's speech during COP29 was the strengthening of Carbon Markets, fundamental tools for offsetting emissions produced by the aviation sector. The company has urged ICAO member states to increase the release of units certified for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), the program that aims to offset emissions through investments in climate projects, such as renewable energy. Thanks to mechanisms such as CORSIA,the aviation sector can make a significant contribution to reducing emissions, promoting initiatives that promote the energy transition and the fight against climate change.
Collective action for a sustainable future
Wizz Air's participation in the COP29 Transport Day demonstrated the airline's willingness to lead the industry towards a more sustainable future. Through strategic investments, support for green policies and a constructive dialogue with key global players, Wizz Air sets an example of leadership in sustainable aviation, actively contributing to the achievement of global climate goals.
