The Marsa Alam International Airport is the first privately owned and operated international commercial airport in Egypt, located at 63 km from Marsa Alam. EMAK Marsa Alam for Management & Operation of Airports SAE, a subsidiary of the M.A. Al-Kharafi Group of Kuwait, had negotiated the 40-year BOT concession agreement with the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority. The airport is operated under a separate agreement by Aeroports de Paris. With its opening Marsa Alam International Airport became a international gateway to the resorts area of the South Red Sea.
