Afraid of the dark: design solutions to keep darkness well at bay, and provide joyful luminosity
Tom Dixon Studio introduces their latest innovations in led lighting
For Tom Dixon, the darkness is an opportunity. As the nights get longer and the days become overcast, we’re forced to spend more time indoors as winter closes in, which can encourage a sense of gloom. This is when we all must find ways to overcome our universal fear of the dark.

Tom Dixon has a massive amount of ideas to keep darkness well at bay. Tom says: "Extensive research has demonstrated that good lighting practices will improve your mood and inspire you to work and relax more effectively. Poor lighting can encourage deprived sleeping, decreased energy or even depression. Interior spaces deserve to be properly considered and beautifully illuminated, so as we approach the multiplicity of winter festivals and celebrations, we’re sharing our ideas and solutions to keep darkness well at bay, and provide joyful, positive luminosity. Together we can conquer our Fear of the dark."
"Afraid of the Dark" is the latest LED lighting collections for the colder months. Latest LED innovations in lighting include:
Melt

The mesmerizing hot-blown glass effect of Melt evokes images of fire, molten embers and lava. Emitting an alluring yet mildly hallucinogenic light, Melt resembles a dancing fire or flickering flame, which stimulates a curious and tantalizing attraction.
Globe

Globe is reminiscent of ancient witch balls, which are hollowed spheres of coloured glass that were used to ward off evil spirits. Globe is a spherical orb of blow-moulded polycarbonate, which is highly mirrored and perfectly reflective during the day. When switched on, it reveals a multiplicity of internal reflections.
Opal

Resembling the moon, Opal is an ethereal sphere that emits a soft and diffused light. The lightweight opalescent polycarbonate enables the pendants to gently sway, casting a lunar glow over an interior. Like the moon, it illuminates the darkness, navigating and influencing one’s movement and direction.
Spring

Spring is made of pliant ribbons of stainless steel which have been arranged like a whisk around a custom-made LED module. The semi-transparent shape relies on darkness as much as illumination to cast patterns onto its surroundings to create dramatic and atmospheric shadows and light play. Its flexible form can be shapeshifted to a variation of silhouettes.
