New safety procedures

For safe, serene travelling from Milan Bergamo Airport

On the basis of the provisions of Italian Government decrees for containing Covid-19 infection, the EU health and safety protocol and ENAC (Italian Civil Aviation Authority) guidelines, Milan Bergamo Airport has put in place a series of measures to guarantee the safety of passengers departing and arriving. According to the new provisions, only departing passengers, and not their companions, are permitted to enter the Terminal from Gate 4.

The safety measures adopted

Body temperature check at the entrance of the terminal
Compulsory face mask use in all areas of the airport
Social distancing measures adopted for queues in all airport areas
Check-in desks with protection barriers
Hand sanitiser dispensers available throughout the terminal
Staggered seating to ensure social distancing is observed
Constant sanitising of all areas of the terminal
Boarding gates with protection barriers
Optical reading of the QR Codes of travel documents
Passenger checks with thermal scanner in the arrivals area
Social distancing measures in place in the baggage reclaim area in the arrivals hall.

In order to provide its passengers with information on the safety measures in place and behaviour to adopt, Milan Bergamo Airport has created a series of communication tools, including videos, that illustrate in detail the various stages of transit through the terminal.

All updates concerning the initiatives and activities put in place to protect the health of passengers passing through the Bergamask airport can be found in real time on the airport website and its social channels.

ORIGINAL USEFUL INFORMATION AND ADVICE

What would passengers like to hear when they reach the airport?

They would like to be welcomed by a friendly, reassuring voice, who guides them through the airport, clearly informing them about the services available, what they have to do, and the steps they should take up to the moment of boarding. Announcements have become even more important now that there are a few more safety rules to be followed. Milan Bergamo Airport has decided to underline the importance of the rules, repeating them in an original format made possible by the performance skills of Daniele Vavassori, stage name Vava77.

There are three separate scenes: one in front of the airport’s entrance door leading into the departures area, the second in the check-in area, and the third at the boarding gates. The videos were produced with the cooperation of Antonio Iorio (Orion - BG), Carmen Fumagalli Guariglia and Laura Ranica.

50 YEARS

OF MILAN BERGAMO AIRPORT

Fifty years ago, on 16 July 1970, the company named Società per l’Aeroporto Civile di Bergamo Orio al Serio - SACBO, was incorporated in the offices of the Chamber of Commerce in Bergamo. This deed was the logical conclusion to a process that had begun two years earlier, when the idea of initiating civil aviation on the existing military airport, dating to 1939, was envisaged. The major players in those stages of the company’s foundation were Attilio Vicentini, who was then president of the Chamber of Commerce, and who would become the first chairman of SACBO; Giacomo Pezzotta, who was Mayor of Bergamo; Giovanni Giavazzi, president of the Province of Bergamo; Gianni Porfidia, Mayor of Orio al Serio; Bernardi Sestini, president of the Taramelli aero club; and Carlo Pesenti, chairman of Italcementi.

AIRPORT OF THE THOUSAND

In its half-century of history, SACBO - Management Company for Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport - has seen the presence of a total of 1,044 employees. They have performed roles at different levels, from management to operational and administrative positions, and many of them began and concluded their entire working life in the airport company organization.

Each of them made their own contribution to the airport’s development and success, conferring the expertise that enabled them to reach high, universally-recognized levels of quality, winning growing appreciation from travelers and operators.

At present the SACBO group, which comprises the parent company SACBO and the 100%-controlled handling company BIS (BGY International Services), comprises 518 employees (234 at SACBO and 284 at BIS). For the reasons described above, SACBO has decided to pay tribute to all those who have dedicated their work to the company and to the service of the airport, considering them all together in the citation “Airport of the Thousand”.

The new Non-Schengen area

Number of gates doubled and space for passengers quadrupled

The new Non-Schengen area is the result of work completed on the eastern side of the airport. Non-Schengen traffic has been transferred to the new building constructed in the east wing, in direct contact with the passenger terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the upper floor, creating a specific route for transit passengers. The work made it possible to improve the available space and add two new decks with lifts, while also increasing the number of boarding gates from 5 to 10.

At the same time, ground floor spaces have been prepared for the BHS block, the baggage handling system that will later be extended and made Standard 3-compliant, with the installation of state-of-the-art screening machines.
