WANDERING THROUGH CAPITAL CITIES
During the winter period, to break up the frenetic rhythm of working days, a city break, wandering around discovering (or rediscovering) the artistic and cultural heritage of magnificent cities, reached with just a few hours' flight time, is a useful, regenerative way to pamper yourself for a few days.
We therefore suggest departing from Milan Bergamo Airport with the new airline Aeroitalia which, from 14th November 2022, will operate 3 daily flights to Rome, the unrivalled 'Eternal City' with an immense artistic heritage without equal.

The unparalleled charm of the eternal city
The moment you arrive in Rome you are aware you are setting foot in a unique and eternal city. Nobody can say they know it really well, even if they are a frequent visitor. Famous for its steps and fountain known as “la Barcaccia” (the old boat), so called because it is in the shape of a half-sunken ship, Piazza di Spagna is a meeting place for both Romans and tourists.
Don’t miss the timeless, much-loved and ever-contemporary London, which is revealed through its monuments and imposing buildings as well as enchanting views along the Thames. London can be reached from Milan Bergamo airport with EasyJet and Ryanair, which land at Gatwick and Stansted airports respectively. From 1st December 2022, the new Aeroitalia airline will also operate flights between Bergamo and London Heathrow airport.

An artistic, historic and cultural heritage without comparison
Paris is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. The “Ville Lumière”, the city of light, is enveloped in a cosmopolitan allure that has enchanted its visitors for centuries. This splendid European city revolves around its river, the Seine, which divides it into two distinct areas: the rive droite (to the north) and the rive gauche (to the south).
A weekend in Istanbul, discovering this city suspended between two continents with its fascinating ancient history, always arouses powerful emotions. From Milan Bergamo, flights to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which serves the Turkish capital, are operated by Pegasus and Turkish Airlines.

ISTANBUL
A unique city situated on two continents
Istanbul extends along the banks of the Bosphorus Strait where the waters of the Black Sea join those of the Sea of Marmara. The European part of the city is divided into two by the Golden Horn, a strip of sea 7 kilometres long. Here Istanbul preserves examples of the three empires of which it was capital (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman), revealing a fusion between East and West, past and present.

The capital of Portugal is the guardian of a glorious colonial past
There are few capital cities that embody the essence of the lifestyle and history of an entire nation. Lisbon in Portugal does just this, and the soul of the country’s people, their relationship with the sea and the first colonial conquests of overseas countries is immediately tangible in the monuments and atmosphere of the city.
Lisbon stands at the mouth of the Tagus, (or Tejo), a river whose banks are connected by two bridges, the ‘25 de Abril Bridge’ and the ‘Vasco de Gama Bridge’. The latter was inaugurated in 1998, in time for the Universal Exposition, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the explorer’s discovery of the sea route to India.

The United Arab Emirates, flanked by the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, are located between Oman and Saudi Arabia and consist of seven in total:
Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain.
The Emirate of Sharjah
Sharjah is positioned between the Emirate of Umm al Quwain and the Emirate of Dubai and stretches some sixteen kilometres along the Persian Gulf coastline.
Sharjah, considered the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates, is a city with a rich heritage well worth exploring.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 500 km from the African coast, the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira consists of four islands of volcanic origin: two major islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, and two uninhabited minor islands. Two-thirds of the archipelago is a protected area with the largest laurisilva forest in the world. This true paradise on earth offers emerald green forests, deep blue sea and mild spring-like temperatures that welcome tourists all year round. The largest island of the archipelago is Madeira, with an area of 741 km². Funchal, the capital of this Autonomous Region, is a modern city and an important tourist, cultural and commercial centre.
From November Funchal can be reached with Ryanair flights departing from Milan Bergamo Airport, operating twice a week throughout the winter season.

Funchal
The city of the island of Madeira, a place where it’s always spring
The city of Funchal, which dates back to around 1508, owes its name to aromatic wild fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), funcho in Portuguese, which grew in abundance at the time of the first settlers. It was sugar, however, that ensured the development of a sustainable economy in the city and throughout the island. The city is filled with history, culture and entertainment, and is also the great tourist hub of the region.
UNUSUAL CITY BREAKS
Discovering Rotterdam and Düsseldorf
Two less 'popular' destinations, but which offer a rich tourism and cultural heritage with numerous attractions, museums, monuments, historical buildings and food and wine specialities to savour, include the ancient port city of Rotterdam, famous for its original modern architecture that makes it a true open-air museum, and Düsseldorf, the German capital of fashion reflected along the Rhine river, with its characteristic old town on the east bank and contemporary architecture on the west.
Rotterdam can be reached from Milan Bergamo Airport with flights operated by Transavia, and Düsseldorf with flights operated by Eurowings.

The city of skyscrapers with a contemporary architectural skyline
Rotterdam is the second largest cosmopolitan city in the Netherlands. This metropolis of unique charm has a dynamic nature and innovative mindset. Also known as ‘the Manhattan on the Meuse’, Rotterdam is famous for its skyline of skyscrapers.
The city’s unique history means it can be discovered from different aspects: as a port city, trendsetting city due to its nightlife, sophisticated shopping city or city of art. Undoubtedly the international port of Rotterdam has played a primary role in the city’s history as it is the largest in Europe and one of the five largest ports in the world.

DüSSELDORF
Modern and elegant city, with many green spaces
Situated in the heart of Nordrhein-Westfalen, where the dark beer Alt is produced and where there are more than 220 thriving bars and restaurants together in a row, one after the other, Düsseldorf is famous for its internationally renowned trade fair centre, but which, after a day’s work, surprises its guests. If we take advantage of the fact that it is easy to reach and has excellent connections, it would be worthwhile seeing it well in the light of day, maybe going directly from the airport to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Municipal Art Gallery. This Gallery, thanks to a private sponsor, offers “Museum Bikes” free of charge to whoever buys an entrance ticket, so that they can wander about peacefully and calmly. On reaching the Hofgarten (the Central Park), the extremely beautiful “green lung” of the city, make use of its 28 hectares by doing a bit of jogging or taking an invigorating walk, leaving enough time to locate the Pavilion, where, with one concert after another, the summer passes as though at the seaside.
'The Italian Capital of Culture 2023' will kick off with a grand inaugural ceremony on 20th, 21st and 22nd January 2023 in the cities of Bergamo and Brescia, which will be followed by a packed programme of 100 major projects and another 500 events. These will take shape over the course of the year thanks to the initiative of many organisations in the area networking and planning together: foundations, associations, public bodies, businesses, universities.
