3rd edition of "Areas for Change Challenge"
A global initiative to engage innovative startups in the development of sustainable solutions in the Food & Beverage and travel retail sectors
Areas, a multinational leader in the restaurant and travel retail sector, has announced the launch of the third edition of the "Areas for Change Challenge". In partnership with Plug and Play, a global innovation platform based in Silicon Valley, the initiative aims to engage startups from around the world in creating innovative and sustainable solutions to address the challenges of the food and beverage and travel retail industries.
This edition is part of Areas' ESG strategy, "Areas for Change", focused on people, planet and the future of travel. The goal is to reduce the company's environmental footprint, contribute to the fight against climate change and steer operations towards greater sustainability.
Blanca López Alerm, Director of Communications, Sustainability and Customer Experience at Areas, highlighted the importance of the initiative: "For the third year in a row, we are promoting this initiative because we are aware of the importance of companies like Areas taking steps to promote solutions that transform the industry. Our goal is to foster a greater commitment to environmental awareness while improving the travel experience for our customers."
With the support of Plug and Play, a global leader in connecting innovative startups with companies looking for disruptive solutions, Areas invites startups to propose real solutions for the following sustainability challenges:
- Waste repurposing: Solutions to revalorize food and non-food waste generated in Areas stores, such as plastic bottles, coffee grounds, orange peels, packaging, and used cooking oil.
- Energy efficiency: solutions to improve energy efficiency through the control and reduction of electricity consumption in Areas facilities.
- Alternatives to plastic bottles: solutions to replace single-use plastic water bottles with sustainable alternatives, using new materials, business models or other solutions that comply with current regulations.
The program will collaborate with startups that can conduct pilot tests, demonstrate international scalability and generate a positive impact in marketing and communication. The selected startups will have the opportunity to collaborate with Areas in a pilot program, receive support in the commercialization strategy and work together with the company's team to develop their projects, with the possibility of becoming future suppliers.
Saeed Amidi, Founder and CEO of Plug and Play, said: "Partnering with Areas allows us to bring together innovative startups with a company focused on sustainability. This partnership promotes real solutions that make a difference. Together, we are shaping a more sustainable future through innovation."
Previous editions of the "Areas for Change Challenge" have been very successful, attracting startups from all over the world to promote sustainability in the travel channel industry. The first edition, held in March 2023, received over 70 nominations, rewarding companies such as Flax&Kale, focused on healthy gastronomy, and Cupffee, creator of innovative edible cups. The second edition saw the participation of startups such as Orbisk, specialized in reducing food waste, Shayp, dedicated to efficient water management, and Circoolar, manufacturer of sustainable uniforms.
