The Soil Museum in the province of Salerno
The only museum in Italy, on the occasion of World Soil Day it presents conferences, meetings, visits and free workshops to discover its genesis and vital importance
"Suolo in Festa": from the Cilento Geopark to Milan to celebrate World Soil Day. From the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni Geopark, in the province of Salerno, to Milan, the Soil Museum, unique in Italy, together with the Mida Foundation, organizes a rich calendar of free events on the occasion of World Soil Day, involving experts, families, schools and children. The initiative, called "Suolo in Festa", aims to raise public awareness of the vital importance of soil, from its genesis to the fundamental role it plays for the balance of the planet, promoting its protection and enhancement.
Soil: an endangered resource
Soil is an indispensable resource for our survival: it provides food, guarantees clean water and acts as a regulator of the earth's climate. However, it is an increasingly risky resource. As the latest report by ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) highlights, Italy loses about 2.5 m² of land per second, for a total of 77 km² consumed each year. The report photographs a worrying situation throughout the country, with some regions particularly affected by soil artificialization:
- Lombardy: 12.16% of the area consumed, the highest figure in Italy.
- Veneto: 11.88%.
- Campania: 10.52%.

A celebration to promote the culture of the soil
The objective of "Suolo in Festa" is twofold: on the one hand to raise public awareness of the crucial importance of soil as a vital resource, on the other hand to encourage a collective reflection on its protection and enhancement. Through scientific meetings, interactive activities and educational moments, the initiative is aimed at a wide audience, from families to children, passing through professionals and experts.
An event between science and community
The various stages of the event reflect an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, capable of combining scientific dissemination and public involvement. In particular, the workshops at the Soil Museum offer a hands-on experience to discover the secrets of the soil, while the conferences highlight the connections between soil health, food quality and people's well-being.
A commitment to the future
"Suolo in Festa" aims to be a starting point to spread greater awareness of the importance of soil and the crucial role it plays for the global ecosystem. At a time when the loss of fertile soil represents one of the greatest environmental threats, this initiative aims to promote a culture of responsibility and sustainability, offering tools and knowledge to contribute to its protection.
