Volotea with TotalEnergies for sustainable fuel
Volotea, the airline that connects small and medium-sized European destinations, is taking a new concrete step towards the decarbonisation of air transport. The carrier has in fact signed an important agreement with TotalEnergies, a multi-energy company active in the energy transition, for the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to be used on flights departing from French airports.
According to the agreement, Volotea plans to purchase up to 7.5 million liters of SAF between 2025 and 2029, thus contributing to the significant reduction of the carbon footprint of its flights from France. The sustainable fuel will be supplied by TotalEnergies and produced from renewable raw materials such as used cooking oils and animal fats, in line with the highest environmental standards.
SAF as a strategic lever for greener aviation
Compatible with current aircraft and existing infrastructure, SAF is now the most immediate and effective solution to decarbonise aviation. According to IATA, sustainable fuel can reduce CO₂ emissions over its entire life cycle by up to 90% compared to fossil fuel. Currently, it is used in mixed form with traditional kerosene in aircraft refueling.
The introduction of SAF into the Volotea fleet began in 2022, with more than 1.5 million litres used to date. Since September of the same year, the operational shuttle between Airbus' Hamburg and Toulouse plants has adopted SAF percentages above the industry average, reaching 12% in 2023.
In parallel, Volotea also develops SAF projects in Spain and Italy, thanks to collaborations with local suppliers, contributing to the growth of a European supply chain based on circular raw materials and low environmental impact technologies in favor of sustainability.
