Arctic destination, between fjords and mountains, midnight sun and northern lights
The coastal town of Harstad is located on Hinnøya Island, Norway's largest, and serves as a gateway to the Vesterålen archipelago and the Lofoten Islands, ideal for exploring the wonders of the far north. Well-sheltered in the Vågsfjorden in beautiful Troms County, the city offers unforgettable nature experiences in an unspoiled archipelago of northern Norway with mountains plunging into the sea and beautiful fjords.

Harstad knows how to express a harmonious fusion of breathtaking natural beauty and a cultural richness that dates back to the Viking and medieval ages. Harstad's Old Town is a fascinating mosaic of traditional and modern architecture. Walking through its streets, you can admire characteristic historic buildings among cozy cafes and elegant boutiques.

For history buffs, Harstad offers priceless treasures. The Old Town of Trondenes has over 2,000 years of history, with a focus on the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. A short distance away, the 13th-century Church of Trondenes stands as the northernmost medieval church in the world, offering a fascinating glimpse into the architecture and spirituality of the time.

The surrounding nature of Harstad is simply spectacular. The mountains and fjords offer opportunities for scenic hikes, such as the climb to Mount Keipen, which offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. During the winter, snowshoeing through snowy landscapes allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of Arctic nature.

In addition, Harstad's location makes it a prime place to admire - from a hiking trail, from the beach or from the city centre - the Northern Lights, in green and purple colours, during the long winter nights. But also enjoying 24 hours of arctic lights of the midnight sun on summer nights, is especially exciting from the viewpoints of the city or just outside such as Folkeparken, Elgen, Keipen and Nupen.

For those looking for a more adventurous experience, the hundreds of islands around the town of Harstad, such as Krøttøya, offer whale watching, sea eagle safaris, fishing, kayaking, and diving. These islands, with white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, are easily accessible from Harstad and guarantee a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A short distance from the center of Harstad you can discover much more about the region, it is no coincidence that the city is also referred to as "Basecamp Arctic", the perfect base for an adventure in Northern Norway. For example, Tromsø is only a three-hour boat ride north of Harstad, and Svolvær (the capital of Lofoten) is about a two-hour drive.

Polar Park, the northernmost wildlife park in the world, is less than two hours' drive from Harstad and you can also take the opportunity to make a stop in Narvik before returning to Harstad. The beautiful islands of Senja and Andørja (the island with the most mountains in all of northern Europe) can be reached in a few hours by ferry. And, in addition, you can also visit Vesterålen, with the Andenes whalesafari and the charming village of Nyksund.
Harstad's kitchen
Harstad's culinary scene is equally interesting. Gourmet restaurants like Umami offer innovative dishes that combine local ingredients with modern culinary techniques, creating gastronomic experiences that delight both the palate and the eye. The local gastronomy offers delicious seafood and traditional Norwegian dishes such as "lutefisk" (dried cod) and "rømmegrøt" (sour cream porridge), which can be enjoyed in typical restaurants with a "hygge" atmosphere.

The food in Northern Norway is really varied and you can indulge yourself in different recipes based on Atlantic cod, herring, king crabs, reindeer, moose, sheep and goats from the local forests to be accompanied with typical onion pesto or lefse (Norwegian multi-layered flat bread prepared with potato shortcrust pastry) with sugar, butter and cheese and the typical locally brewed beer from the Harstad brewery. And, to end on a sweet note, you can enjoy desserts made with jams and jellies from the area made with blackberry, rhubarb, blueberry and arctic raspberry. Try the local carrot cake or the Kvæfjordkake, Norway's national cake, made with meringue and vanilla cream paired with a particular local drink: birch sap lemonade. Delicacies that can also be purchased as travel souvenirs, in beautiful packages, to recreate the taste and aromas of this land once you return home.

The city also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars and clubs offering live music and entertainment. Cultural events such as concerts, theatre performances and festivals are further special occasions to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the city such as the renowned Arctic Arts Festival which in June, during the summer solstice, celebrates the art and culture of the region with music, theatre, dance and performance events. But also the Backyard Festival, the coolest in Norway, which is held in August with concerts and a characteristic market with many exhibitors throughout the center of Harstad.
