Experiences in Narvik, between history and nature
One of Narvik's strengths is its ability to offer experiences that range from contemplating the wilderness to discovering its history. A visit to the Narvik War Museum is a must for those who want to fully understand the historical significance of this city. The museum is a moving tribute to the events of World War II, with exhibits that tell the story of the 1940 Battle of Narvik and the lives affected by the conflict, offering deeply educational knowledge. For an in-depth look at the local culture, you can also visit the Narvik Museum housed in a lovely garden building, which offers an immersion into the city's industrial history and the daily lives of the people who have lived here over the centuries. The permanent exhibits also chronicle the life of the miners, Narvik's growth as a trading town, and the history of the Ofotbanen Railway.

In fact, the one offered by the Ofoten Railway (Arctic train - Ofoten Line) is another experience not to be missed. Considered one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world, it was built at the end of the nineteenth century and inaugurated in 1902 to transport iron from Lapland in Sweden to Narvik. The train runs from Narvik in Nordland to Bjørnfjell, the last stop before the Swedish border, and winds its way for 43 kilometers through towering mountains, waterfalls, tunnels carved into the rock, and breathtaking views. Train travel becomes an adventure itself, allowing you to admire landscapes that change drastically with the seasons.

Animal lovers can try their hand at game drives, dog sledding or, in May, a special owl safari along the coast of Fjellkysten. While golf enthusiasts can play in the greenery of the Narvik Golf Club which houses an 18-hole course, where the arctic conditions offer a breathtaking golfing experience in the Skjomen Valley, next to the Frostisen Glacier.

The midnight sun, with its golden light that never sets, creates a surreal and enchanting atmosphere, perfect for exploring the surrounding nature without the pressure of the passage of time. Long summer days offer the opportunity to live every moment to the fullest. To admire the midnight sun in summer, you can also take the cable car up to the top of the Narvikfjellet mountain, where the Narvikfjellet restaurant is located at 656 meters above sea level which offers a panoramic view of the fjords, mountains and the city of Narvik.

Narvik cuisine
Narvik's cuisine is influenced by the wild and unspoiled nature of the Arctic region in which it is located, surrounded by fjords, mountains and seas. Narvik's culinary tradition reflects the connection between the local culture and the sea, with fish playing a central role in many recipes. One of the most famous typical dishes is Norwegian cod, caught in the waters of the Arctic and prepared in different ways, including dried and salted, accompanied by boiled potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Another local delicacy is lutefisk, a traditional Norwegian dish made from dried fish and then treated with a lye solution to soften it, generally served during the Christmas holidays and accompanied by bacon, peas and mustard sauce.

Also tasty are fresh cod and king crab served with melted butter and fresh bread. Game also plays an important role in the local diet. Reindeer and moose meat dishes are served with sauces made from berries, such as cranberry. Reindeer meat is prepared in stews or grilled, offering a robust and aromatic flavor. Try the bidos, a traditional Sami stew with reindeer meat and vegetables. Finally, among the desserts, the dessert with arctic blackberries (multer) and multekrem  prepared with cream made from arctic blueberries (cloudberries), a rare and precious fruit from the north, also served with whipped cream, stands out.

Authentic local products, which reflect the Arctic culture and traditions of Northern Norway, can also be taken home. In Narvik you can buy cloudberries (arctic blueberries), also or in the form of jam, and fresh or canned king crabs. Among the most characteristic souvenirs are the Sami handicrafts (the first inhabitants of the region dedicated to reindeer herding) such as jewelry, leather clothing and carved wooden objects. Souvenir shops are located in the city center and in the Narvik Storsenter shopping center, where you can find local products, clothing and special Norwegian design objects. In addition, the Sami Market, when available, is a great place to discover authentic handmade items.
