Milan Bergamo Airport awarded for assistance to passengers with reduced mobility

A prestigious European award celebrates the Lombardy airport's commitment to offering an inclusive and high-quality experience for all travelers
The ANMIC (National Association of Mutilated and Invalid Civilians) of Bergamo has awarded SACBO a prestigious award for the commitment and quality of the service offered to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) at Milan Bergamo airport. The president of ANMIC Bergamo, Giovanni Manzoni, presented the award to the president of SACBO, Giovanni Sanga, during the annual meeting with the representative associations of people with disabilities, held at the SACBO headquarters. The association expressed deep gratitude to SACBO for the attention, sensitivity and collaboration shown in the constant improvement of services dedicated to people with disabilities. Milan Bergamo airport confirms itself as a model of international excellence in this area.

SACBO's commitment to accessibility and inclusion
Giovanni Sanga, president of SACBO, welcomed the award with enthusiasm: "It is an honor to receive this recognition. The attention paid to people with disabilities, but also to those struggling with momentary disabling states that require assistance at the airport, is always maximum. This guarantees the right to fly using all available services, facilitating operations on departure and arrival. Credit must be given to all SACBO staff for having achieved widely recognized quality levels, but which we are committed to improving further".

A ten-year collaboration to break down barriers
Giovanni Manzoni, president of ANMIC Bergamo, underlined the importance of the synergy between ANMIC and SACBO. For years they have been collaborating to ensure accessibility and the removal of architectural, sensory and motor barriers, also improving services for other categories such as families with small children. The Sala Amica at Milan Bergamo airport is an example of excellence: a welcoming environment, equipped with every comfort, highly qualified staff and an area dedicated to people with autism.
Manzoni highlighted a recurring problem: "We must note, unfortunately, that people entitled to assistance do not always comply with the regulations, making the necessary reservation to be followed and accompanied. Nevertheless, the airport operator continues to face the task with professionalism, competence and dedication".

Growing numbers and awareness
During the meeting, the data relating to PRM assistance at Milan Bergamo Airport were presented. In 2024, 88,480 assists were carried out, an increase of 50% compared to 2019 and 2022. The share of passengers with reduced mobility was 0.74% of the total of 17.3 million passengers, the highest ever recorded. On average, 82 passengers out of every 100 flights received support, but 23% of PRMs did not book the service in advance, as required by regulations.
To address this critical issue, SACBO, together with ANMIC and other associations, has launched an awareness campaign to promote compliance with the rules. This intervention aims to ensure an efficient service tailored to the needs of each individual PRM passenger (people with disabilities, reduced mobility).
