Pass4Core: safety and innovation in transport at Malpensa

Inauguration of the new secure car park for heavy vehicles: a step forward for sustainability and European logistics
An important milestone has been achieved within the PASS4CORE project (Parking Areas implementing Safety and Security FOR CORE network corridors in Italy), co-funded by the CEF-Transport program of the European Commission. The Final Event was held at the Cargo City of Milan Malpensa which marked the inauguration of the new secure parking lot for heavy vehicles, a strategic initiative for national and European logistics.
The project, coordinated by the ZAI Consortium, represents a total investment of 27.5 million euros, of which 5.5 million co-financed by the European Union. The goal of PASS4CORE is ambitious: to create a network of safe parking areas for hauliers along the main European transport corridors, with a total of 1,357 certified parking spaces by 2025, to which another 2,500 will be added thanks to future initiatives.

An answer to the needs of modern logistics
The new Malpensa safe car park covers an area of 63,000 square metres, with 32,000 square metres dedicated to 154 stalls for heavy vehicles. The entrances, monitored by advanced control systems, offer maximum safety to vehicles and drivers, thanks also to the latest generation LED lighting. There is no shortage of services dedicated to hauliers, including 9 stalls with electric charging stations for refrigerated vehicles, bathrooms and showers, a refreshment area and a relaxation area inside an 800 square meter building with a panoramic terrace overlooking the Alps.

Synergies for sustainable mobility
The initiative is not limited to ensuring safety and comfort: the project is part of a broader vision of sustainability. During the event, the integration with Malpensa H2, the future green hydrogen refuelling plant, developed by Edison Next, was highlighted. This facility, located near the car park, will represent a strategic point for the spread of hydrogen along European corridors and to promote mobility with a low environmental impact.
The Governor of Lombardy Attilio Fontana and the representatives of SEA Milan Airports highlighted the strategic importance of Malpensa as a national logistics hub. "With the first secure car park at an Italian airport ," said Armando Brunini, CEO of SEA, "Malpensa confirms its position at the forefront of innovation and sustainability."

A secure and connected future
Thanks to PASS4CORE, Italy aligns itself with European safety standards for road logistics, with 24 safe parking areas expected by mid-2025. The dedicated digital platform will facilitate access and management of stops, improving the experience of hauliers.
With initiatives like this, Milan Malpensa Airport consolidates its role as a central logistics hub for the future of European mobility.
