The Wall of Wonders at Malpensa

At Terminal 1 of the WOW! Walls of Wonder with permanent installations by Andrea Crespi, Alice Ronchi and Marco Giordano
From the ten-year collaboration between SEA Aeroporti di Milano and the MA*GA Museum comes WOW! Walls of Wonder, an ambitious project that transforms airport spaces into a contemporary art gallery. The initiative aims to redefine not only architecture but also the anthropological and aesthetic experience of the airport space, combining functionality, waiting and beauty in a harmonious combination.

Curated by Emma Zanella and Alessandro Castiglioni, respectively director and deputy director of MA*GA, with the technical coordination of Monica Faccini, the project includes site-specific installations created by young Italian artists. After a long selection and production process, today three permanent works by Andrea Crespi, Alice Ronchi and Marco Giordano are inaugurated, designed to offer departing and arriving travelers moments of surprise and reflection. It is a unique case in Italy that an airport manages to combine the functional canons of space with a permanent artistic proposal.

An artistic journey between departures and arrivals at the airport
Alice Ronchi – True Care, 2024
Alice Ronchi's installation, made with enamel, polycarbonate and aluminium, creates a visual dialogue between two areas of the airport: departures and arrivals. The work, composed of abstract paintings on several transparent levels, generates a dreamlike landscape with reassuring and enveloping colors.
"I wanted to work on the atmosphere of this space, a place of passage and waiting that often lacks an empathic point," says the artist. "My intent is to create a poetic presence that welcomes the traveler with wonder." The work is located in the transit corridor.

Marco Giordano – Sulla punta della domanda / On the tip of the question, 2024
The three kinetic sculptures suspended in the skylights of the non-Schengen passport control areas are an invitation to calm and reflection. The aerial shapes, made of metal and fiberglass, vibrate gently with soft colors and constant movements, recalling the flow of time and the moment of transition in which, as the title suggests, a question is asked. "I wanted to create a work that captured movement and time, leading the viewer to reflect on the transience of the moment," Giordano explains.

Andrea Crespi – In Every Journey (Love is the destination), 2024
Made with 20 plexiglass panels and adhesive vinyl, Andrea Crespi's work explores the theme of transformation and visual communication through optical illusion. Each panel contains a letter of the phrase "Love is the destination", which is gradually revealed through optical vibrations in black and white. "Love is the driving force of every journey, whether physical, emotional or spiritual," explains Crespi, inviting travelers to reflect on the destination as not only a geographical goal, but also a human one. The work accompanies passengers in the corridor of the central satellite that leads to the gates.

Art and space: a unique combination at Milan Malpensa airport
WOW! Walls of Wonder represents a significant development in the collaboration between SEA and Museo MA*GA, which over the years has promoted experimental art projects in the Milan Malpensa Airport Terminals. Previous initiatives include installations by Ugo La Pietra and Missoni, as well as screenings of Andy Warhol's T.V., created with the support of the MEET Digital Center and the Andy Warhol Museum.

This ambitious initiative aims to redefine the airport's functional spaces, transforming them into environments where art and travel meet. The works, accessible exclusively to passengers, offer an engaging aesthetic experience, enriching the moment of waiting with reflections, color and poetry.
