Denmark at the heart of sustainable aviation
SAS and partners join forces to transform aviation and accelerate the transition to sustainable fuels, strengthening the country's leadership in the green aviation sector
In a decisive move towards a more sustainable aviation industry, SAS, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Copenhagen Airport and Aalborg Airport have signed a collaboration agreement aimed at promoting Danish sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) production. This agreement aims to form a strong and cohesive coalition to support the transformation of the aviation sector, reducing environmental impact and strengthening Denmark's position as a leader in sustainable aviation.
The goal of the partnership is to accelerate the transition to more environmentally responsible aviation by promoting public awareness and regulatory support. Through the collaboration, the partners aim to create a "sustainability valley" in Denmark and Scandinavia, where renewable energy can be transformed into sustainable fuels. This approach will contribute to the creation of new jobs in the green sector and increase the country's energy autonomy.
One of the key points of the project is Fjord PtX, a Danish Power-to-X (PtX) initiative developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, which aims at the production of sustainable synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF). Fjord PtX represents a successful model for sustainable fuel production and, through the agreement, the partners intend to create the ideal conditions for its development. The aim is to meet the sustainability needs for Danish domestic aviation and the requirements of the European ReFuelEU Aviation programme.
SAS
It has been Scandinavia's leading airline since 1946, operating from its main hub at Copenhagen Airport (CPH), with additional hubs in Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN). Each year, SAS serves more than 25 million passengers and transports 60,000 tons of cargo to 135 destinations in Europe, the United States and Asia. With more than 10,000 employees, it works with partners and customers to drive transformative changes in aviation and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. SAS joined SkyTeam in September 2024 and, together with its partner airlines, offers an extensive global network.

Airports in Copenhagen
Copenhagen Airports A/S operates Copenhagen/Kastrup and Roskilde airports. As Denmark's largest airport, with 29.8 million passengers expected in 2024, Copenhagen Airport is a vital part of Denmark's economy and infrastructure. To maintain this position in the future, the airport invests in its own development and supports the industry's ambitious goals for greener aviation. Copenhagen Airport is already preparing for the aircraft of the future, the travel models of the future and the technologies of the future, in close cooperation with its partners.
Aalborg Airport
It is the third-largest airport in Denmark and connects passengers to global destinations. Recognized for its welcoming atmosphere, the airport staff offers attentive service to all travelers. Aalborg Airport offers easy access by car and domestic train and has set out an ambitious climate strategy that plans to become a carbon-neutral airport by 2025.
