Heathrow accelerates towards net zero
London airport records a record February and reinforces its commitment to sustainability
Heathrow confirms its role as the UK's leading air hub, registering over 5.7 million passengers in February. The 7% growth in traffic to the United States and Canada has strengthened its position as a strategic gateway for transatlantic traffic.
February marked the twelfth consecutive month with a daily average of more than 200,000 passengers. When looking at leap years, it was the busiest February on record. Among the most popular destinations for travelers looking for winter sun are the Caribbean, Italy and Greece, while routes to global hubs such as Delhi, Dubai, Mumbai and Riyadh have operated with a high occupancy rate.
Sustainable growth: reducing emissions and new environmental targets
Despite strong demand, Heathrow continues on its path towards sustainability. The 2024 Sustainability Report confirms a 7.5% reduction in carbon emissions in the aviation sector and a 15% reduction in ground operations compared to 2019. Record passenger traffic has not compromised the plan to achieve net zero targets by 2030.
A further step forward is the incentive to increase the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) up to 3% in 2024, one percentage point more than the government target.
Reducing noise impact is also a priority: in 2023, the area exposed to high airborne noise (55 dB Lden²) decreased by 18% compared to 2019. In addition, the number of delayed flights dropped in 2024, despite being the busiest year ever. Heathrow also keeps all air quality parameters within UK regulatory limits.
Expansion and innovation for a smoother travel experience
A month after announcing Heathrow's commitment to expanding its strategic role, the airport is developing proposals for a privately funded expansion, which will be submitted for government review later this summer.
Meanwhile, Heathrow launched the "One Stop Security" pilot program in February, in partnership with the UK Department for Transport and the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This initiative simplifies screening for transit passengers from select North American routes to the rest of the world, ensuring faster and more efficient connections.
Through advanced technology and strong international collaboration, Heathrow continues to invest to improve the travel experience, reduce environmental impact and cement its position as the UK's leading growth air hub.
London Heathrow Airport
Heathrow is the UK's international gateway, Europe's largest airport and the world's most connected megahub , connecting over 200 destinations. The airport welcomes over 200,000 passengers on around 1,300 flights each day and serves as a British hub for trade, tourism and investment. Around 75,000 people work at Heathrow, with the airport employing around 10% directly, with the rest working for Team Heathrow partners, including airlines, ground handlers and retailers.
