Energy requalification at Trapani airport
Reduced electricity consumption by 24% and over 400 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year less into the atmosphere
The Vincenzo Florio airport in Trapani Birgi has completed an important energy redevelopment work in partnership with Engie, with a significant impact on sustainability. Engie's project has made it possible to reduce annual energy consumption by 24% and eliminate over 400 tons of CO2, the equivalent of 163 fewer cars on the roads of Trapani in one year. Announced in 2022 and launched in 2023, the interventions were completed on schedule, with the symbolic handover of the renovated spaces to the president of Airgest, Salvatore Ombra, by Fabrizio Di Battista, Director of the Southern Area of Engie Italia.
The president of Airgest, Salvatore Ombra underlined that the redevelopment also involved an entire building located in the airport space, previously in disuse, and now used not only for airport services but also as an operations center for monitoring the systems. And that the works were carried out without ever interrupting the performance of airport activities, always guaranteeing the full functionality of the services.

The plan envisaged an extensive energy efficiency and modernization of the plants, including:
►Photovoltaic system on the roof of the terminal. The plant is 300 square meters with 143 modules and a power of 50 kWp, capable of generating 75,000 kWh / year for the airport's self-consumption.
►Replacement of lighting with over 1,000 LED lamps, including the aircraft apron light towers, with an intelligent monitoring and remote management system to adjust the light intensity according to the use of the rooms and natural light.
►Redevelopment of the heating systems, with two multi-purpose heat pumps for heating, summer air conditioning and domestic hot water production, replacing the previous diesel boiler.
►Implementation of an integrated remote control system, which allows remote management of electrical and thermal systems to optimize temperature and consumption.
►Sustainable mobility, with the installation of two charging stations for electric and hybrid vehicles.
With these innovations, Trapani Birgi Airport reduces its environmental impact and improves resource management with a view to long-term sustainability .
