NetZero goal anticipated: Torino Airport is now Level 3+ certified
The airport brings forward the NetZero goal to 2040 with important decarbonization projects
Torino Airport has obtained the prestigious Level 3+ 'Neutrality' certification as part of the international Airport Carbon Accreditation program, promoted by ACI Europe. This important milestone testifies to the Piedmontese airport's commitment to reducing and neutralizing its CO2 emissions through a structured and measurable strategy.
The protocol, launched in 2009, guides airports towards carbon neutrality through the adoption of innovative measures, including energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. Thanks to a progressive plan of actions, Torino Airport has managed to eliminate emissions under its direct control, offsetting the remaining ones with high-quality carbon offsetting projects.
A virtuous path: from mapping to neutrality
Torino Airport has followed a gradual path to achieve neutrality:
- Level 1 'Mapping' (2018): analysis of carbon emissions;
- Level 2 'Reduction' (2021): implementation of reduction measures;
- Level 3 'Optimisation' (2022): Stakeholder engagement.
With the 3+ certification, the airport has expanded its commitment to also include emissions related to passenger travel and achieving a neutral impact on global warming.
Significant achievements and future projects
Over the past five years, the airport has reduced CO2 emissions by more than 80% compared to 2019, saving over 10,000 tons of CO2 in 2023 alone. This is equivalent to planting 330,000 trees. Key future projects include:
- Increase in energy production from photovoltaic systems (currently more than 12% of consumption);
- Electrification of the airport fleet;
- Improvement of the efficiency of air handling units;
- Replacement of electrical transformers with advanced devices;
- Reduction in the use of fossil fuels for heating.
Towards NetZero by 2040
The 'NetZero' goal has been brought forward by 10 years compared to the original plan, set for 2050. Andrea Andorno, CEO of Torino Airport, underlined how this certification is a symbolic milestone for the aviation industry:
"Our strategy is based on the involvement of partners and third parties, as demonstrated by the European decarbonization projects in which we participate, including the TULIPS consortium. Working together is key to a sustainable future."
An example for the sector
Olivier Jankovec, General Manager of ACI Europe, also expressed appreciation for the commitment of the Turin airport, defining it as a model for the aviation industry: "Torino Airport has demonstrated leadership in reducing emissions and implementing innovative projects such as the largest photovoltaic system on the roof of an Italian airport. Congratulations on this amazing achievement."
Torino Airport confirms itself as an excellence in the European airport landscape, continuing with determination towards a sustainable future, respecting the environment and future generations.
