Air Navigation Conference ICAO
The 14th ICAO Air Navigation Conference and the main topics covered in the two weeks of work and the contributions of the Italian delegation
The 14th edition of the ICAO Conference on Air Navigation concluded on 6 September in Montreal with the participation of 750 delegates from the 193 ICAO Member States. The event, which took place over two weeks, saw a significant involvement of the Italian delegation, initially led by ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma, accompanied by Director General Alessio Quaranta and the Permanent Representative of Italy to ICAO, Ambassador Sergio Martes.
Di Palma took an active part in the discussions, representing Italy's position in favour of the development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and supporting the adoption of emerging technologies to promote sustainability in the aviation sector.
During the conference, several recommendations were made that will be proposed to the ICAO Council for inclusion in the agenda of the next General Assembly, scheduled for autumn 2025. Among the main topics discussed, there were
- the impact of new technologies on air navigation systems, with a focus on flight safety and improving operational capabilities,
- cyber security,
- strengthening the global air navigation system,
- the long-term objectives for the decarbonisation of aviation,
- the increase in hyper-connectivity in modern Earth-Edge-Earth communication systems, essential for the automatic transmission of critical information for the conduct of the flight.
In the second week of the conference, the Italian delegation was led by the Deputy Director General of ENAC, Fabio Nicolai, and included Carmela Tripaldi, Central Director of Technical Standards and Aeronautical Operations; Luca Valerio Falessi, Airspace Director; Costantino Castronovi of the Security Department; Yonara Capitani of the Institutional Relations and Communication Department; Marco Silanos, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the ICAO Council and Francesco Maria Bartimmo of the Directorate General for Airports, Air Transport and Satellite Systems of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
