Malpensa's master plan until 2035
ENAC and SEA announce that the approval process for the infrastructural development that will allow Malpensa to grow in the coming years has been completed
The State-Region agreement has officially approved the urban planning compliance of the 2019-2035 Master Plan of Milan Malpensa airport. Thanks to this important approval, Malpensa can now proceed with the start of the works envisaged by the infrastructure development plan, which aims to support the estimated growth of passenger and freight traffic in a fully sustainable way and in line with the requirements of the EIA Decree and territorial agreements.
The interventions envisaged by the Malpensa Master Plan
The Master Plan, which covers the period 2019-2035, provides for an articulated series of infrastructural interventions to be carried out in phases. Among the main works:
- Passenger Terminal expansion: to efficiently accommodate an estimated traffic volume of 40 million passengers by 2035.
- Aircraft parking areas: new infrastructures to optimize air traffic management.
- runway and taxiway system: operational improvements with new taxiways and fittings to increase efficiency and reduce aircraft transit times.
- intermodal infrastructures: areas dedicated to innovative transport systems to ensure better integration between the various means of mobility.
- Warehouses and cargo services: new second-line facilities to enhance logistics capacity and support freight traffic.
The interventions have been designed to ensure environmental and social sustainability, with the aim of reducing CO₂ emissions by 3,000 tons per year by 2049 and increasing the modal shift towards rail transport, which has risen from 12% in 2016 to 20% in 2023, with a forecast of reaching 25% in 2035.
The green light from the Services Conference represents a fundamental step for the development process of Malpensa, the result of close collaboration between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, ENAC, ENAV, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defence, the State Property Agency and the Lombardy Region. Of particular importance was the constant dialogue with the Metropolitan City of Milan, the Lombard Park of Ticino, the Province of Varese and the municipalities surrounding the airport.
The ambitious development plan will allow Milan Malpensa airport to consolidate its role as a strategic intermodal hub, ensuring sustainable growth, projecting it towards the future of European air transport with a positive effect on the quality of services rendered to passengers.
