"Historic Jeddah" from the seventh century AD was founded as an important port for the Indian Ocean trade routes, funneling goods to Mecca. In the past, it was also the gateway for Muslim pilgrims to Mecca arriving by sea. The architecture of the ancient city preserves imposing tower-houses with large wooden Roshans built at the end of the nineteenth century by the city's merchant elites and also coral stone houses, mosques, ribats, souks and small squares.

The Al Shafei Mosque in Jeddah is also registered as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was built during the reign of the Caliphate Omar Bin Khatab with marble pillars and Al-Mangabi stones that date back 1400 years while the minaret is more recent and dates back to 850 years ago.
