What to see in Muscat

The elegant capital of the Sultanate of Oman
Muscat is the capital of Oman, a country that occupies the south-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, which embodies the charm of its ancient history but also a charm with a contemporary character. The city fascinates with its extraordinary beauty in harmony between antiquity and modernity, history and nature. The city of Muscat, also known in Italian as Muscat, overlooks the coast of the Gulf of Oman, between the sparkling blue of the ocean and the majestic Hajar Mountains with peaks that reach 3000 meters above sea level.

Muscat is not your typical Middle Eastern metropolis: here the cityscape is elegant, with structures that do not exceed minarets, characterized by a low and harmonious architecture, with traditional buildings, mosques that stand out against a spectacular natural landscape and the ancient Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani (dating back to 1500), which majestically protect sumptuous monuments and palaces.

The city of Muscat serves as the cultural, political, and economic center of Oman and carefully preserves its centuries-old traditions while elegantly embracing progress. The Sultanate of Oman is also known for its moderate politics and its hospitable culture, characteristics that make Muscat an ideal destination for travelers looking for culture, adventure and relaxation in a welcoming environment. In Muscat, the cultural hub of the country, ancient and authentic Omani traditions are also enhanced and highlighted in museums, as well as at the National Museum in Muscat, which tells the story of Oman's cultural heritage.

Visiting the city immerses you in a wide range of experiences, from exploring a traditional souk in the morning to a show at the renowned Royal Opera House in the evening, from adventurous excursions in the nearby mountains perfect for hiking and trekking to relaxing walks along the Corniche, not forgetting the golden beaches and marine activities, including fishing, kitesurfing or scuba diving. In fact, Muscat develops on a stretch of sandy coast bathed by a blue and calm sea, where Qurum beach is located. Not far from the center is Qantab Beach, a clear lagoon with sand interspersed with rocks. And, from the marina of Sidab you can go on an adventure, to spot dolphins or admire the Daymaniyat Islands (about an hour off the coast of Muscat).

Even traditional Omani cuisine, which reflects an Omani-Asian fusion, is to be tried as a real cognitive experience of the local culture. Prepared with traditional methods, you can taste grilled meat dishes, "mishkak" (marinated grilled meat), "kabuli" (type of Omani biryani) and renowned Omani sweets such as halwa or date syrup that can be bought in traditional markets or souks that also display the best of local handicrafts such as silver jewelry, ceramics, the famous Khanjar (the traditional dagger of Oman) or incense, national pride (UNESCO has recognized four Omani sites as World Heritage Sites for the incense produced here), also used in the renowned and luxurious perfume Amuage, made in Muscat in a company near the airport.

In this context rich in nature, sea and beaches, history and culture, Muscat proves to be a place to discover calmly. If you opt for a long holiday in Oman you can also venture out to discover its UNESCO World Heritage Sites , visiting the Bahla Fort, the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ain in the governorate of A'Dhahirah, the Land of Incense in Dhofar with the incense trees of the Wadi Dawkah reserve, Oman's Aflaj irrigation system and the ancient city of Qalhat in Sur.

The city enjoys a warm climate year-round, with the winter months being the ideal time to visit, thanks to milder temperatures. Autumn temperatures are perfect for a beach holiday in Oman when from October to April the average temperatures are around 30 degrees. By plane you reach Muscat International Airport (MCT), which is the main airport in Oman about 15 km from the capital Muscat, the hub of the national airline Oman Air.

TOURS AND EXCURSIONS IN MUSCAT
To discover Muscat and its wonders or its surrounding areas (between sea, canyon and wadi or desert) there are numerous tours and excursions that allow you to explore the unique beauty of the city and its region, getting to know the culture, nature and history of the capital of Oman up close and making the trip to this fascinating city a truly unique experience.

One of the most popular tours is the one that allows you to visit the historic center of the city. Walking through the alleys of old Muscat, you will admire traditional Omani architecture and the main cultural points of interest, such as the Sultan's Palace, the Mutrah Corniche, the Mutrah Souq, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the ancient fortresses of Fort Al Jalali and Fort Al Mirani.

Those who want to discover the breathtaking nature that surrounds the city, hiking to the Hajar Mountains is a perfect option. Wadis, or river valleys, such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, are among the favorite destinations for outdoor lovers. Excursions in these areas allow you to explore deep gorges, natural pools and waterfalls immersed in the rock, offering a unique trekking experience and refreshing moments of relaxation in the clear waters.

Not far from Muscat, you can arrange a boat trip to visit the Daymaniyat Islands, a nature reserve that is home to rich marine biodiversity. The islands are a true paradise for snorkelers and divers, with transparent waters full of corals, tropical fish and sea turtles. An unforgettable experience is also the sunset dhow cruise, a traditional cruise aboard a dhow, the typical Omani boat, to admire the coast of Muscat from a unique perspective.

Finally, a desert excursion is a must for anyone visiting Muscat. Starting from the city, you can reach the Wahiba Sands desert, where golden dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, and experience the thrill of dune bashing, riding camels, or spending the night in a Bedouin camp under an incredibly clear starry sky. Equally fascinating are historical excursions to discover the ancient neighboring cities, such as Nizwa with its imposing fortress and a lively souk.
