What to see in Muscat

 

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is undoubtedly one of the most important modern architectural works in the Middle East and is a must-see for anyone visiting Muscat. In addition to the majestic handmade Persian carpet, which is considered one of the largest in the world, you can admire the beauty of Islamic details in the tiles, inlaid ceilings and the gigantic and precious chandelier. The mosque can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers and is also famous for its tall minarets and manicured gardens. Non-Muslim visiting hours are limited to the mornings and there is a dress code that requires men and women to cover their arms and legs, while women to cover their heads. Built as a gift from His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to the people of Oman, the mosque is an important architectural masterpiece.

 

 

Not only does Al Alam Palace represent the ceremonial residence of Oman's Sultan Qaboos, but it is also one of the capital's most iconic symbols. Although access to the palace is limited to the exterior, its structure is an architectural marvel with a façade decorated in blue and gold, reflecting the modern Omani style. This palace, nestled in the heart of Old Muscat, is surrounded by manicured gardens and two old Portuguese fortresses, Al Jalali and Al Mirani, which dominate the entrance on either side facing a secluded bay. Rebuilt in the 70s, the representative building welcomes dignitaries and world leaders.

 

 

The Mutrah Corniche is an ideal area for relaxing walks, especially at sunset when the atmosphere is colored with warm and evocative tones. Along the Corniche, you will find numerous cafes, restaurants and local shops, where you can taste typical dishes based on fresh fish. The walk on the Arabian Sea leads directly to the Souq of Mutrah, one of the oldest in Arabia, a labyrinth of narrow streets between the scent of spices and incense where you can buy everything, from perfumes to silver jewelry. This souk is one of the most authentic experiences to have in Muscat. Nearby is the port where traditional dhows dock.

 

 

The National Museum of Oman is not only a must-see for history buffs, but also for those looking to better understand Omani culture. The rooms are organized chronologically and thematically, with a focus on the country's maritime history , tribal culture , and mineral wealth. The museum also offers interactive exhibits, perfect for families and children, or workshops that allow you to delve deeper into the art of Omani ceramics and crafts. A visit to this museum is enhanced by a multimedia room that screens documentaries on the country's history and the rise of the Al Said dynasty.

 

 

The Royal Opera House in Muscat is one of the most prestigious cultural venues in the Arab world. The programming varies from classical music concerts to ballet and opera performances. The calm waters make it perfect for a relaxing swim, while the long palm-lined promenade provides the ideal setting for an evening stroll.

 

In the different restaurants in Muscat you can enjoy fresh fish dishes prepared with the catch of the day directly from the Mutrah Fish Market. Visiting this market in Mutrah, a suburb of Muscat, is a picturesque attraction, ideal for discovering the most authentic and hard-working side of Muscat's daily life. Every morning the market, recently renovated in the structure, comes alive with fishermen unloading their catch, a true feast of colors and sounds. In addition to seafood, you can also find stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables. After visiting the market, you can continue along the Corniche promenade and stop at the Mutrah souk to shop for dates, textiles, terracotta ceramics, silver and gold objects, typical curved daggers (khanjar), exotic perfumes and of course incense (called frankincense).

 

 

Wadi Shab is one of the most popular destinations for those looking for an adventurous excursion a short distance from Muscat (about 160 km, 1 hour by car plus a journey only with a small boat, to cross a river in a few minutes). This natural gorge in a canyon offers a breathtaking landscape, with natural pools of turquoise water and small waterfalls hidden among the rocks. After a short boat ride through the wadi, you can walk between paths and climb rocks to reach the pools where you can swim. The peace and quiet of Wadi Shab, along with its unspoiled natural beauty, make it a magical place for those looking for a unique experience. Between Sur and Muscat, the white pebble and sandy beaches of Bimmah, Fins, and Tiwi are an incredible sight between neighboring Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Shab.
