Travel trends of the over 65s from Italy
According to Vueling's booking data, the preferred destinations are in Italy: Catania, Florence and Palermo
The desire to explore the world, to discover new cultures or even just to take a relaxing break knows no age limits. A striking example are the so-called "Silver", the over 65s, who are proving to be tireless and curious travelers. Books from work commitments and with more free time on their hands, these travelers can take advantage of off-season deals and enjoy longer trips at affordable rates. This trend is growing all over the world and Italy is no exception. Vueling, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, has analyzed booking data to identify the destinations most loved by the over 65s.
Travel trends of the over 65s from Italy
From the data collected by the Spanish low-cost airline, it emerges that senior Italian travelers prefer, first of all, destinations in Italy. The scenic and cultural richness of the Belpaese, combined with the convenience of connections, makes Italy a perfect destination. In the first half of 2024, among the favorite destinations of the Silvers are, first and foremost, Italian cities, followed by European destinations such as Croatia, Spain, the United Kingdom and France.
Analyzing in more detail the cities chosen by senior travelers, the ranking sees Italian cities such as Catania, Florence and Palermo in the first three places. The volcanic charm of Sicily, the Renaissance poetry of Florence and the architectural and historical wonders of Palermo are confirmed as unmissable destinations. This is followed, in order of preference, by some international destinations , including lively Alicante, magnetic Madrid, splendid Dubrovnik, Bilbao and its cultural scene, sunny Malaga and, finally, Barcelona and Split. This indicates a clear preference for coastal and historic towns, where travelers can combine relaxing moments by the sea with fascinating cultural tours.

Regenerating trips out of season
As far as travel periods are concerned, the 2023 data show a consolidated trend of the over-65s to travel in the so-called "shoulder periods", preferring the months of May, June, September and October. These months offer several advantages: first, you can avoid the crowds of the high season and enjoy a more authentic and peaceful experience. In addition, traveling out of season allows you to take advantage of cheaper offers, making the trip not only more enjoyable, but also more affordable.
While summer months such as July and August are generally avoided, the same applies to the winter period, from December to February. This seasonal adjustment therefore offers Silvers not only an opportunity to travel in peace, but also the opportunity to explore new destinations at a reduced price, enjoying a more authentic and less crowded tourist experience.
