Dubai Airports boosts accessibility
Dubai Airports has announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and inclusivity for passengers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These measures aim to make the travel experience more comfortable and supportive for neurodivergent travelers and their families.
Dedicated services for autistic passengers
Dubai Airports has introduced specific services to assist passengers with ASD, including:
- Sensory pathways: areas designed to reduce excessive sensory stimuli, offering a peaceful environment.
- Educational materials: Visual guides and resources to prepare passengers for the journey, helping to reduce anxiety.
- Personalized care: Staff trained to support the specific needs of autistic travelers.
To ensure adequate support, Dubai Airports has implemented training programs for airport staff, focused on:
- Understanding Autism: Raising awareness of the characteristics and needs of passengers with ASD.
- Communication techniques: strategies for interacting effectively and with empathy.
- Situation management: approaches to deal with any challenges during the journey.
Among the most important innovations is the introduction of the Sunflower Lanyard, part of a global program that allows people with special needs to be easily identified and supported during their journey.
The Sunflower Lanyard is a cord decorated with small sunflowers on a green background, internationally recognized as a symbol of an invisible disability , such as autism, anxiety, epilepsy, cognitive disorders, chronic medical conditions, etc.
Wearing it is not mandatory, but the wearer signals to airport staff the need for more assistance, patience or attention, without having to explain clinical details. Trained employees know how to recognize this and offer appropriate support in a discreet, empathetic and respectful way.
These initiatives reflect Dubai Airports' commitment to promoting an inclusive and accessible environment for all travellers.
