Christmas in Vilnius

The year is particularly special as the Lithuanian capital also celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Old Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , adding an extra touch of magic to the atmosphere. With its well-preserved medieval floor plan and harmonious mix of Baroque and other architectural styles, the city provides a magical backdrop for Christmas celebrations.

 

 

Every winter, Vilnius shines with Christmas lights, but this year, the city will exceed expectations. The celebrations begin on November 29 with the lighting of the Christmas tree in Cathedral Square, an event eagerly awaited by locals and tourists. The creativity and innovation with which the Christmas tree is designed every year are internationally renowned. The tree is not just a decoration, but a true work of art that often uses sustainable and cutting-edge materials, blending tradition and technology.

 

 

Coinciding with the UNESCO anniversary of the historic center, the medieval heart of the city is enriched with decorations that frame Christmas markets, exhibitions and light shows. On November 29, the Cathedral Square comes alive with the lighting of the tree, a symbol of the beginning of the celebrations. Every year, Vilnius surprises visitors with new thematic designs for the tree, which often reflect important events in the city. This year the tree is visible until January 6, illuminating the festivities with its inimitable elegance.

 

 

 ► Christmas Market
From November 29 to December 29, the Christmas market, set up next to the tree in Cathedral Square, transforms the city into an enchanted kingdom. Walking through the stalls means soaking up the scents of homemade delicacies, such as traditional Lithuanian Christmas cookies made from poppy seeds. In addition, you can enjoy hot drinks and buy handcrafted gifts, in a cozy and authentic atmosphere.

 

 

 ► Ice skating rink
From November 30 to January 26, 2025, the ice rink is one of the main attractions. This year, the rink is in the heart of the city, in Piazza del Municipio, with an innovative and unconventional design that offers more than 400 square meters of space for skating. Perfect for enjoying a winter day, the track is accompanied by food stands offering hot drinks.

 

 

 ► Christmas Rush
On 7 December, the Vilnius Christmas Race, now in its 49th edition, welcomes runners of all ages and levels. Participants in festive costumes (from Santa Claus to snowmen) gather for a run through the decorated streets of the city, creating a joyful and sporty atmosphere.

 ► Gastro Fair at Lukiškės Prison
On December 13-15 and 20-22, the historic Lukiškės prison is transformed into a bustling food market. This space, which was once a maximum security prison and now houses over 250 artists, offers unique and classic food for the holiday season. It is also possible to visit exhibitions and attend concerts in this fascinating location, also made famous by the filming of the "Stranger Things" series.

 

 

 ► Loftas Uptown Christmas Market
From December 20 to 22, for those who like to shop at the last minute, the Loftas Uptown Christmas Market is the place to be. This vibrant market gathers local creators of fashion, art and design, as well as producers of artisanal drinks and quality food, allowing you to find unique and original gifts.

 

Visiting this city is truly a magical experience and, in addition, Vilnius is also a sustainable city. The European Commission has announced Vilnius as the winner of the European Green Capital Award 2025, recognizing the city's extraordinary ability to integrate sustainability efforts with the well-being of its residents. Vilnius has successfully connected various initiatives aimed at achieving clean air, clean water, biodiversity conservation and green spaces. The European Green Capital Awards programme has been operational since 2008 and Green Capitals across Europe collaborate as part of the Green Capitals Network, which includes 36 cities.
