Christmas markets in Merano
From 29 November to 6 January, tradition, craftsmanship and flavours in the winter setting of the Alps
Christmas in Merano is a journey through the traditions, flavours and unique atmospheres of the winter holidays. From November 29 (opening the night before) to January 6, the Christmas Markets welcome visitors with a magical combination of local handicrafts, South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties and the breathtaking backdrop of the Alps overlooking the city. The market houses overlook the Passer river, along the Promenade, and offer a wide selection of organic and typical South Tyrolean products.

During the markets, get ready to meet mythical figures from Alpine folklore: the Krampus, the legendary "demons" that accompany St. Nicholas. While the patron saint distributes sweets to good children, the Krampus, with their cowbells, wander the streets frightening passers-by, keeping alive a custom that has its roots in the ancient peasant fears of winter demons.

Walking through the market houses, you will discover a world of South Tyrolean handicrafts, from Christmas decorations to typical products such as bacon and pretzel bread. Stop to savor local delights and perhaps indulge in a craft beer as you explore the many gastronomic offerings.
A haute cuisine experience awaits you in the Piazza della Rena, where the Christmas Village offers hot dishes signed by a starred chef. Here, you can enjoy gourmet specialties inside a chalet, while around you the elegance of the Esplanade palace and the ancient Kallmünz Castle create a perfect backdrop. The square also hosts workshops for adults and gin and chocolate tastings.

Children will find their dimension in Goldy's House, where they can participate in creative workshops, make Christmas decorations, create hats for New Year's Eve or attend screenings of Disney films. Numerous other workshops are designed especially for them, such as the opportunity to learn how to bake delicious Christmas cookies.
