Wizz Air's Net Zero Strategy
Wizz Air has unveiled Flying Towards Net Zero, its comprehensive strategy to achieve net zero emissions, based on a concrete and measurable approach that is divided into three key areas: Flights, Fuel and Footprint. An operational manifesto that comes at a crucial time for aviation, between the slowdown of the green transition and the increase in regulatory costs.
Thanks to a €14 billion investment, the low-cost airline has drawn up an ambitious but realistic roadmap: reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% through a latest-generation fleet, reducing emissions by 53% thanks to the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), and improving air traffic management by 4%. Objectives that, overall, will lead to a decarbonization of 87% by 2050, in line with the requirements of the ICAO.
A pragmatic and technological strategy
In detail, the company plans to:
- Decarbonise by 53% with SAF, the central pillar of the plan. Investments and partnerships are already in place for large-scale production and distribution, albeit slowed down by high prices and limited production.
- Investing in aircraft innovation (21%) and fleet renewal (7%), with Airbus A321neo as the flagship model, today the most efficient fleet in Europe.
- Modernize airspace (4%) and optimize operations (2%), leveraging artificial intelligence to improve trajectories, fuel consumption and timing.
With the lowest emission intensity per passenger-kilometre in the world, Wizz Air remains a leader in sustainability. The short-term goal is to reduce emissions by 25% by 2030.
The presentation of Wizz Air's Net Zero Strategy was held yesterday at the Training Center in Budapest, on the occasion of World Earth Day. With Flying Towards Net Zero, Wizz Air is also making a direct appeal to institutions: coordinated action is needed, especially to incentivise the production and adoption of SAF and to accelerate the reform of European airspace. For the aviation of the future, sustainability is no longer an option, but the key to ensuring growth and competitiveness.
