Conference highlights: safety, sustainability, multimodality and new technologies
The speeches focused on the role of the airport and its development, which must always include a challenge in maintaining a balance and harmony with sustainability, communities and cities in the area. Investments, technology, environmental mitigation towards increasingly sustainable growth are just some of the cornerstones of the development of Milan Bergamo airport, which is preparing to welcome a railway system that will connect the airport to Bergamo station, thus laying the foundations for multimodal transport, which is also accompanied by attention to a bicycle-friendly airport that is careful to facilitate the connectivity with the territory even in a gentle way. In fact, Sacbo is a certified 'Bike Friendly' company just as Milan Bergamo airport is the first airport in Europe to have obtained the 'Bike Friendly' certificate.

President Sanga underlined how Milan Bergamo airport is going through a moment of great transformation that gives a new face to the airport, which continues to consolidate its growth, closing 2024 with over 17 million passengers transited. An important year also for the expansion of the terminal and for the future connection of the train, with a view to multimodality and interconnection with multiple vehicles, as per the recommendations of the European Union. Plane, train, motorway and bicycle are the future of Bergamo airport's multimodality. A future that envisages growth that follows sustainability criteria in all areas, including environmental mitigation for the municipalities bordering the airport, which has so far counted 14 million interventions.

This was followed by technical speeches that illustrated the growth of Milan Bergamo Airport in the field of infrastructure, sustainability and technologies including artificial intelligence. From 2007 to today, the many interventions have made Milan Bergamo airport a modern, efficient and safe airport.

What will the airport of the future look like?
For the future, Milan Bergamo airport is therefore oriented towards multimodality, sustainability, technology and the use of artificial intelligence, with a digital and interconnected ecosystem where the exchange of data in real time will increasingly help the airport to be more efficient in terms of services offered and security.

2025 includes important milestones such as the expansion to the east of the airport, the new check-in counters (end of May - beginning of June) and in December the area on the first floor with new spaces for security checks and new shops, including the renovated duty free which goes from 600 square meters to 1600 square meters. For the activation of the rail connection to the terminal we will have to wait until after the Olympics. The new works still in progress include further services and improvements such as accessibility, an airport service center with offices and a hotel by the end of 2026.

In addition, future works for a new multi-storey car park, airside buildings, a new barracks, a shed for ramp vehicles and an artificial intelligence project for a "digital twin" of the airport, a virtual environment for security and all airport services, a real super PC calculator that analyzes all data in real time and facilitates the choices to be made. An AI aid that already integrates the current use for baggage, non-aviation business and e-commerce.
These are just some of the news because the airport is always at work and continues its growth by already working on the new airport development plan to 2043 to be presented to ENAC.
