Düsseldorf Airport becomes Artport
A new approach to enrich the passenger experience with art, transforming the terminal into a living cultural gallery thanks to the "Art Walk" initiative
Düsseldorf Airport is redefining the passenger experience by transforming the terminal into a living art gallery. Through the "Art Walk" initiative, the airport has partnered with local artists to install temporary artworks in previously unused spaces, integrating them with the permanent installations already in place.

Light, free, serene, full of tension and vastness: Heinz Mack (*1931), co-founder of the international ZERO Group, with "Helios" continues the great play of light and light effects, which flood the surrounding space through rotating metal strips. Towards the sun! The kinetic light sculpture, created in 1969, was reconstructed in a slightly modified form in 2004, after the airport fire.

Since 2015, the mural on the wall of the terminal has been making dreams fly. The Spanish artist connects landscapes and emotions, creating imaginary worlds. The lines of the work are based on the map of the city of Düsseldorf and are intended as a metaphor for the journey through life. This journey also leads to the airport as a transit space, represented as a light and dynamic cloud, a symbol of freedom and new beginnings.
This transformation aims to offer travelers an immersive cultural experience, making Düsseldorf International Airport DUS not only a transit location, but also an artistic destination. The initiative reflects the airport's commitment to promoting local art and culture while improving the environment for passengers.
Through the Art Walk, Düsseldorf Airport positions itself as an "Artport", combining functionality and creativity to enrich the travel experience. This initiative is an example of how airports can evolve beyond their traditional role, offering passengers added value through art and culture.
