Milan Bergamo Airport: 2024 results and future prospects

A record year between new investments, sustainability, destinations reached and number of passengers. Additional commitments for 2025 and beyond
At the SACBO press conference at the end of the year, President Giovanni Sanga, together with Amelia Corti in her new role as General Manager, took stock of 2024 and provided a look at the coming year and beyond. 2024 is confirmed as a very successful year for Milan Bergamo Airport, which consolidates its role as the third airport in Italy. With over 17 million passengers, expected by the end of the year, the airport records an all-time high, accompanied by important infrastructural and strategic developments. In fact, for SACBO, 2024 was a year of intense shipbuilding activity and related investments.

Traffic growth and new destinations
In summer 2024, the airport reached 154 international destinations, with particular success for connections to the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai (flights doubled from May to October 2024) and Sharjah, as well as flights to Istanbul, thus allowing passengers additional onward destinations around the world

Investments and new infrastructure
2024 saw intense shipbuilding activity for:
  • expansion of the north apron and taxiway (cost of the works about 39 million euros), with better operations and traffic distribution for greater sustainability (3 stands for class D aircraft).
  • 22 new check-in counters, in addition to the existing ones (by June 2025).
  • Completion of the structure for the railway connection, completed on 25 November 2024. The train is expected to be operational by 2026, in line with the plans of the State Railways.

While, the project for a new Hilton hotel involves an investment of 30 million euros. Work on the hotel will begin in January 2025 and will be completed within two years.

Sustainability and innovation
The airport has invested significantly in sustainability:
  • Photovoltaic system of the airport, operational from January 2025, which will guarantee 10% of the airport's electricity needs.
  • 10 million euros for the purchase of electric vehicles for internal transport, such as cars and buses.

Non-aviation performance and future prospects
Non-aviation activities performed very well in 2024 for both Travel Retail and parking:
  • 19 Food & Beverage points and 33 Shop points of sale have contributed to the commercial success of the airport.

New investments are planned for the end of 2025 to further improve the airport offer and face the future with ambitious projects. The Commercial Gallery includes new spaces for 1200 square meters and a renovated Duty Free.

Industry outlook
Although  air transport is set to grow in the coming decades (there is talk of a doubling in the next 10-20 years), with the opening of new markets (for example: Middle East, Asia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Korea, Pakistan, etc...) there are slowdowns in deliveries to airlines of new aircraft by Boeing and Airbus manufacturers, which lead SACBO to expect a reduction in traffic growth of 4% or 5% at its airport.

2023-2027 Business Plan
The total amount of investments is equal to 203 million euros. Speeches include:
1) Flight infrastructure: 38.9 million euros
2) Expansion of the Terminal: 44.3 million euros
3) Access and road system: 33.5 million euros
  • Construction of a portion of a new multi-storey car park with new covered car parks
  • Redevelopment of the road network to ensure the construction of the new access to the airport from the East
  • Construction of the connection between the railway station and the airport.
4) Goods area: 15.4 million euros
5) Other buildings: 10.6 million euros
6) Networks and plants and environmental protection plan: 27.6 million euros

Revenues in 2023 were 200 million and in 2024 SACBO expects to exceed them. While, 67 million euros in investments are already planned for next 2025.
With these solid investments, sustainability at its core and an ever-expanding network, Milan Bergamo Airport is positioned as a model of efficiency and innovation for the future of air transport.
