FS and train-air intermodality

More connected train and plane for sustainable and integrated transport. Fiumicino is a model of excellence and among the projects underway are those of the airports of Venice, Bergamo, Olbia and Trapani
The mobility of the future will be increasingly sustainable and networked. The FS Group, through the development of new infrastructures and synergies with the main airlines, aims to make the train the preferred means of reaching airports, reducing the use of cars and reducing CO₂ emissions.

Currently, in Italy, 26 airports are already connected to the railway network or integrated with intermodal solutions such as buses, airlinks and people movers. The goal is to offer a fluid and integrated travel experience, ensuring efficient and sustainable "door-to-door" solutions.

Rail connections to airports: ongoing projects
  • Among the models of excellence already in operation is the Leonardo Express, which connects Roma Termini to Fiumicino airport with 126 trains a day and over 350 thousand passengers a month.
  • Venice Marco Polo Airport: a new 8 km route is under construction to connect the airport to the Venice-Trieste railway line, facilitating connections with the North-East.
  • Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport: a new railway station will allow you to reach the airport in just 10 minutes, with an expected over 13 thousand passengers per day by train.
  • Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport: a 3.4 km connection with the Golfo Aranci-Macomer line to integrate the airport with the Sardinian railway network.
  • Trapani Birgi Airport: the new "Vincenzo Florio Airport" stop on the Trapani-Birgi line is planned, transforming the station into a natural extension of the airport terminal.

To foster the growth of intermodality, FS has launched strategic partnerships with major airlines, including the Memorandum of Understanding with ITA Airways and Lufthansa and the collaboration between iryo and ITA Airways.
Rail intermodality thus becomes the heart of an increasingly sustainable transport system, confirming FS's role as a key player in the mobility of the future.

"Looking at the numbers, I don't see the competition between trains and planes. FS is a company that represents the country with 97 thousand employees, 17 billion in investments have been made this year and we manage about 10 thousand trains a day, mostly regional," said FS Group CEO Stefano Antonio Donarumma during the Fit - Cisl Conference "Air and rail transport: strategies for an integrated and competitive system".
