ENAC and GSE united for sustainable aviation
Agreement on energy efficiency and renewable energy in Italian airports to achieve the EU decarbonisation targets set for 2030 and 2050
The Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and the Energy Services Manager (GSE) have signed an institutional collaboration agreement to accelerate the decarbonisation of the Italian airport sector. The agreement aims to improve the energy efficiency of the airports, encourage the use of renewable sources and promote innovative solutions in line with European environmental objectives.
Key objectives and initiatives
The agreement is part of the context of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), contributing to the sustainable development of air transport. Among the main initiatives planned:
►energy upgrading of airport infrastructures;
►energy self-consumption between airports through renewable energy sharing;
►experimental projects for the use of biofuels and green hydrogen in aviation;
►training and information on the incentive mechanisms managed by the GSE for the sector.
In line with the European Green Deal and environmental directives, ENAC and GSE will collaborate to develop innovative solutions that combine sustainability and efficiency. The agreement aims to make the airport system more resilient and competitive, reducing the environmental impact of the sector. The agreement was signed during the conference "The Italian system for the reconciliation of air transport with the environment", organized by ENAC in collaboration with ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) and GSE which took place today, in Rome, with the participation of the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
Signatories of the document were ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma, the Acting General Manager. Enac Fabio Nicolai, the GSE CEO Vinicio Mosè Vigilante, the GSE President Paolo Arrigoni, the Sole Director of Enac Servizi Marco Trombetti.
ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma specified: "At the ground level, our country is ahead of its sustainability goals: just think of the photovoltaic park recently inaugurated in Rome Fiumicino by ADR, the largest plant in Europe built in an airport. In terms of engines, we will encourage the development of biofuels which, compared to electric and hydrogen, represent a solution compatible with current aircraft".
