Remote control for charging electric vehicles at Bologna Airport
Innovative design that reduces CO2 emissions and improves energy efficiency
Bologna Airport becomes the first in Italy to implement a remote control system for charging electric vehicles, thanks to the pioneering initiative of the Consorzio Esperienza Energia (CEE) through the department dedicated to sustainability, Enerhub. This project represents a significant step towards a sustainable future for air mobility, marking a breakthrough in the energy management of airport infrastructure.
The advanced infrastructure, which has been operational for eight months, has already delivered 75,000 kWh of fully renewable energy, equal to the annual consumption of 26 Italian households. The energy savings compared to a traditional system are estimated at 45,000 kWh, equivalent to the annual consumption of 16 households. This success is due to the use of energy from renewable sources such as the photovoltaic system and cogeneration, with an additional 300 kW of capacity that will soon be active.
The charging system uses the standard OCPP communication protocol, a first for the airport sector in Italy, and includes a 240 kW DC Fast station, dedicated to charging the new electric buses for passenger transport. This innovative approach not only allows energy consumption to be tracked in real time, but also associates the use of charging stations with authorized operators via RFID cards, ensuring transparent and optimized management.
Fabio Zambelli, director of CEE, explains: "Our charging stations not only allow accurate control of consumption and energy savings, but also the reduction of CO2 emissions by 100%, a significant environmental benefit. Considering the better energy efficiency of electric motors compared to traditional diesel engines, the advantages are obvious: a 60% saving in energy and a reduction in emissions in a sustainable and traceable way".
The introduction of remote control and dedicated charging infrastructure represents a model that can be replicated for other airports, promoting a transition to greener and more sustainable mobility. Bologna Airport, with the support of CEE and Enerhub, demonstrates how technological innovation and attention to the environment can go hand in hand to revolutionize the airport sector and reduce the impact of the environmentand daily operations.
This project not only offers a practical and environmentally friendly solution for the management of airport vehicles, but also acts as a catalyst for further sustainable initiatives, making Bologna Airport an example to follow in the fight against climate change.
