Volotea focuses on Palermo
Bilbao and Heraklion join the destinations reachable from Palermo, thanks to Volotea's commitment to strengthening tourism and regional mobility
Volotea, one of the fastest-growing air carriers in Europe, has unveiled its offer for summer 2025 from Palermo Airport, further consolidating its presence in the Sicilian capital. Among the most eagerly awaited novelties, two new international routes that will connect Palermo to Bilbao, in the heart of the Basque Country, and to Heraklion, on the island of Crete.
The route to Bilbao will be operational from April 12, 2025, with two weekly flights (Tuesday and Saturday) and a total of 20,500 seats available. Heraklion, on the other hand, will be reachable from 8 July 2025 with a weekly flight on Tuesdays, for an offer of 2,880 seats during the summer season. These destinations reinforce Volotea's role as a strategic carrier for tourism and culture.
2024 is confirmed as a year of growth for Volotea at Falcone e Borsellino Airport. From January to October, the company carried over 443,000 passengers (+15% compared to 2023), operating more than 2,800 flights and offering around 481,000 seats. With a seat load factor of 92% and a completion factor of 99.3%, the airline has consolidated its position among the preferred carriers of travellers.
By the end of the year, Volotea expects to reach 501,000 passengers transported to Palermo (+16% compared to 2023) and to exceed the 543,000 seats offered.
"Palermo is a key city for our growth objectives - said Valeria Rebasti, International Market Director of Volotea. Since 2013, the year in which we opened our second Italian operational base here, we have transported over 5.2 million passengers. With the new routes to Bilbao and Heraklion, we aim to further consolidate our presence, encouraging tourist flows between Sicily and Europe and supporting local economic development."
Salvatore Burrafato, president of Gesap, also underlined the strategic importance of the collaboration with Volotea.
Volotea closes 2024 in Italy with over 4 million passengers carried, marking a growth of 10% compared to 2023. The high quality of service and commitment to connectivity have allowed the company to achieve a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 38.1 points, which rises to 49.5 among Megavolotea customers. In addition, 9 out of 10 passengers would recommend Volotea to family and friends, confirming their appreciation for the experience on board.
With an offer that in 2025 includes 20 routes from Palermo, Volotea continues to invest in Sicily, strengthening the capital's role as a privileged gateway to the Mediterranean and Europe. The new routes to Bilbao and Heraklion not only increase international connectivity, but confirm the company's commitment to supporting tourism and the local economy.
