Amsterdam Airport gets a makeover
A new 5,000-square-meter area in Lounge 1, part of an ambitious renovation plan to enhance the traveler experience with modern design, expanded spaces and sustainable materials
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has inaugurated a new area of Lounge 1, intended for passengers on European flights, adding 5,000 square meters of modern and functional spaces. This expansion marks a milestone in the airport's ambitious renovation project to improve the quality and experience of travellers. With a total of 20,000 square meters already renovated, Lounge 1 is now more spacious, bright and welcoming, in line with the new design and sustainability standards adopted by Schiphol.

The new plaza of Lounge 1 stands out for its elegant and contemporary design. Natural light, ecological materials and a strategic layout of spaces create a welcoming and relaxing environment. Three large trees, up to six metres high, give a natural feel, while bamboo panels and seating made from grass clippings at Schiphol underline the airport's commitment to sustainability.

This transformation required significant interventions, including the conversion of a parking lot and four existing buildings to create a larger and more coherent space. The central square, with additional seating, is the heart of Lounge 1 and will welcome new facilities, such as shops and dining options, in the coming months.
Sybren Hahn, Executive Director of Infrastructure at Schiphol, called the new area "an important step towards transforming the oldest part of the airport into a modern and bright space". Hahn emphasized the importance of providing passengers with an environment that combines comfort, quality and efficiency, to ensure a pleasant and stress-free travel experience.
Schiphol's new vision is inspired by the simplicity and authenticity that characterised the airport's original design in the 1960s. With this transformation, the airport aims to create a cohesive and recognizable identity in all areas.

The renovation of Lounge 1 is part of an unprecedented investment plan: 6 billion euros earmarked over the next five years to improve infrastructure, services and overall quality. In addition to Lounge 1, the renovation of Pier C and Lounge 2 is planned, along with hundreds of smaller projects distributed throughout the airport area.
With this commitment, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) aims not only to meet the needs of today's travelers, but also to future-proof the airport while maintaining its role as a state-of-the-art international hub.
