Direct fiber optic link between Olbia and Alghero airports
Integration and development of the two structures, which can increasingly operate as a "single airport with two runways". The IT systems of the two airports work together in real time
Technology is at the service of the development and modernization of the airports of Northern Sardinia, helping to virtually reduce the distance between the airports of Olbia and Alghero and to promote their digital transformation path.
Thanks to an agreement between the management companies Geasar SpA and Sogeaal SpA, and Siportal, a national leader in the telecommunications and fiber optic data transmission sector, an exclusive fiber optic backbone has been created. This innovative project, made possible by the support of the Gallura Data Center in Olbia, connects the IT platforms of the two airports through a 150 km long cable, guaranteeing very high standards of transmission to minimize optical dispersion and optimize communications over long distances.
The new infrastructure offers ultra-high-performance and resilient connectivity, with an initial data transport capacity of 1 Gbps, expandable up to 100 Gbps to meet future needs. This "digital highway" not only allows immediate information sharing between the two airports, but also makes possible a significant improvement in operational and production processes, offering high-performance connectivity from every point of the airports.
The initiative is part of a wide-ranging strategy for the innovation and digitization of airport infrastructures in Northern Sardinia. Future implementations include advanced services such as disaster recovery systems and cryptographic communications protection solutions, thus ensuring greater security and reliability.
The project represents a decisive step towards the future, positioning Alghero airport and Olbia airport as national reference models for technological integration and operational sustainability. The airports reinforce their commitment to pursuing excellence and responding to the challenges of a constantly evolving sector.
